Lesser travelled road in the South Island

During a recent week-long escape to New Zealand’s South Island, we chose to leave our skis behind and venture off the beaten path. Instead of the usual bustling ski resorts, we explored the tranquil and lesser-known Ashburton Lakes region. This area, often overlooked by international visitors, offers peaceful landscapes and stunning natural beauty that captures the essence of the South Island’s wilderness and only a short journey to the tourist hotspots of Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo.

Serene Waters and Majestic Mountains

We spent our first couple of nights by the crystal-clear waters of Lake Heron. Only a couple of hours drive from Christchurch Lake Heron Station is well worth a visit and if you can make sure stay a couple of nights. The views over the lake in all directions is breathtaking.

Rugged Shorelines, Mountains and Vibrant Wildlife

The Hakatere Conservation park covers some 60 000 hectares and has ample tracks to wander and explore from Lake Clearwater through to Lake Coleridge. Deep blue lakes and rivers reflect the surrounding mountains and are dotted with native plants and frequented by diverse birdlife, making it a sanctuary for photographers and nature lovers alike. The Ashburton Lakes provide a unique habitat away from the crowds.

Expansive Views and Open Skies

Everywhere from Castle Hill to Mount Cook gives you fantastic views and opportunities to explore. Close by to little towns and villages, excellent pies (big ups to Fairlie Bakehouse - a must stop!) and hidden gems like Ōpuke Spa and Thermal Resort. No more than a couple of hours driving apart will find you in a different valley and unique landscape.

Final Thoughts

Our week at Ashburton Lakes was a rejuvenating departure from the usual South Island itinerary with some classics thrown in for good measure. For travelers looking to explore scenic vistas beyond the well-trodden paths, this hidden gem promises unforgettable landscapes and serene moments in nature.
